Fogging Applications - in Stored Products |
 |
|
The small droplets created by Dyna-FogŪ machines have many applications to protect the storage of
food and other products such as documents, leather, tobacco and others, against harmful insects and organisms.
Most biologically active chemicals (insecticides, fungicides, disinfectants and deodorizers) will give their best results if applied in small droplets between 10 and 100 microns in size, according to chemical type.
Where wind drift is advantageous or in a closed building, smaller droplets can be utilized to maximize the efficacy of the chemical and reduce application costs.
The thermal fogs produce small droplets that will carry into nearly all of the airspace in a building. ULV droplets will also penetrate airspaces without remaining in the air for such a long period of time, and with some machines the droplets can be produced in sufficient numbers to create a wetting effect on surfaces. |

Some examples: |
- EGrain Stores, Stored Grains, Bagged Products, Processing Rooms and Bulk Stored Potatoes.
|
Treatment of Empty Stores |
A thorough cleaning of the store is an essential prerequisite to a successful insect control. It is necessary to ensure that insects are not protected by layers of dust. After cleaning, a good kill of exposed insects can be achieved with a fogging machine. Where a residual deposit is also required, a ULV machine that produces the right size droplets to give a good knockdown in sufficient numbers, as well as give a wetting effect in surfaces, is preferred. A ULV machine is also preferred when the building is constructed of materials which have deep crevices (brick or wood) where the superior wetting ability of the ULV sized droplets will give greater penetration. |
|
Treatment of Grain Stores |
To disinfect empty grain stores and silos prior to store newly harvest grains, it is essential to carefully clean all surfaces prior to treatment to ensure that insects are not protected from the spray, by layers of dust. A thermal fog will thoroughly penetrate all parts of the structure, but where there are relatively deep crevices (in brick or wood), the use of a formulation which also has residual effect should be applied with a ULV machine, to give a higher level of control. |
|
Treatment of Stored Grains |
Where such treatment is permitted, and forced air through the grains is available, a thermal fog can be introduced via the forced air to eradicate an insect infestation. This technique can be used as an alternative to fumigants. A machine with sufficient output to input all of the chemicals before any fog comes out of the top of the silo must be used. |
|
Treatment of Bagged Products and Processing Rooms |
Normally, only natural pyrethrums are permitted to be used, and a suitable formulation for either thermal fogging or ULV should be selected. Only flying insects or those on the surface of the bags will be controlled. The best results are usually obtained with an oil-based product containing at least 3% pyrethrum. If a water-based product is used, a carrier should be used to prevent the droplets from evaporating in the atmosphere before they hit the target. |
|
Treatment of Bulk Stored Potatoes |
A thermal fog is used to apply sprout suppressant on potatoes stored in bulk or in boxes. In large bulk stacks, forced air is necessary to assist the fog through the stack. When the stack is covered with straw for frost protection care should be exercised in handling the machine to ensure that the straw does not ignite. |
|
|
Choosing the Right Product |
The ULV equipment is ideal for applying disinfectants or mould inhibitors into empty cold stores prior to
filling with produce. A range of thermal (hot) fogging machine is available which vary from small handheld to truck mounted machines. Fogging should only be done in closed buildings, which should not be opened for 3-4 hours. |

CYCLONE ULTRA™ - Technical Specification
|
The Dyna-FogŪ CYCLONE™ produces small droplets of the optimal size to get the best knockdown effects of natural pyrethrum. The machine has a "throw" of about 60 ft. (20m). Where regular treatments are required, these machines can be permanently installed and controlled by a timer for automatic operation.

Where there is sufficient airspace to allow the droplets to circulate, buildings of up to 6000 mē can be treated with as little as 6-12 litters of prepared formulation. Treatment with ULV machines should be done in closed buildings which should
not be opened for 1-2 hours. Adequately ventilate before unprotected people re-enter the buildings. |
